Review "Five Pound Dumbbell Exercises by Professor Attila

The stories are told - with a sneer of disbelief- of the old time strong men who only worked out with 5 pound dumbbells. Professor Attila is one of those about whom these stories are told. Well, here is Professor Attila's own 5 pound dumbbell workout straight from his desk, in 1913. It involves several high rep sets of quite a few different exercises. I have not tried it to see if it works. I do not know it if will work. I suspect that the old time state fair strongmen actually did so many exhibitions that those shows were their heavy 2 -3 x per week workouts and these 5 lb dumbbell workouts were what they did on their "easy" days.

In any case the exercises are well described. The directions are easily followed. And most of the exercises have a satisfactory image of the exercise to accompany the text. There are several additional exercises beyond the actual workout, all with 5 lb dumbbells. And that is all we get, and all we were told to expect.

The book meets its stated aim of presenting one of the old time strongmen routines. And it does that quite well. As a piece of history, this is fascinating. As an exercise book, it does give a workout, well described and illustrated. Is the workout worth doing in the modern world? I doubt it. But it would be fun to just go through it a few times to see how it feels.
Useless information
Where do I start? First of all, the book states that it was published in 2013. I suppose the ebook was published then, but the original was published in 1913! I got my first clue from the amateurish photos that obviously were taken in 1913. Most of all, my copy (on a Fire) will not advance pages properly, you can advance the bar to the end and go backwards, but not forward. Next, the instructions are questionable as many exercises are to be done "violently". The only redeeming point of this ebook is that it was only $2.99. The one star I gave it was a gift.
