Polly Franks, a Thalidomide baby, had never walked without crutches much less tried to bring a sexual predator to justice, when in 1997 she took on the challenge of stopping one of America's most prolific sexual predators from her wheelchair. Devil at My Door is the story of Joseph Frank Smith, a sexual predator, and of one woman's determination to end his trail of pain and misery. The book begins with the early activities of the sexual predator in 1983 San Antonio, Texas. It then traces the lives of Polly and her nemesis as they become forever entwined, ending in a state courthouse in Richmond, Virginia in 1999.
During Joseph Frank Smith's crime spree between 1982 and 1998, he was linked to a minimum of 286 incidents of sexual crimes. No one knows how many of his attacks remained unreported or were not linked to him. Polly s involvement in his case began in 1995, stemming from her experience as the mother of two children who were victimized by a former neighbor and family friend who turned out to be none other than Joseph Frank Smith. Although she uses a wheelchair, Polly was determined to take a stand in light of the failures of the courts and legal system. One of her first steps to help fight this predator was to become a licensed private investigator.
The story is an alarming look at the American criminal justice system including the failures of the various, prosecutors, courts, and judges who were charged in keeping society safe from Joseph Frank Smith. While ultimately, justice would prevail and law enforcement would identify and get their man, for over a decade and a half, hundreds of women and young girls were terrorized and assaulted. In a country, where we see so many of our freedoms being overwhelmed by the information age, the complete failure of the law enforcement and legal systems to follow one violent and dangerous criminal from one jurisdiction to another and ensure that the terms of his conviction were followed is almost incomprehensible.

Excellent book! This is a very well written, interesting book, yet down to earth in a way that you feel like you're right there with the author. It's a true story about a sexual predator that lived right in the neighborhood with the author and her family. Kudos to Polly Franks for working hard and doing whatever was necessary to help get him convicted. She then writes this to help warn everyone about the dangers that we could all be exposed to without ever knowing it. I believe that every parent, grandparent, teacher and other people who work with children in any capacity should read this to become aware of what we are exposed to and how to help get these predators put away when we discover them. All churches should have this as required reading for the people who are watching the children in their care.Product details

I have known Polly for years and was excited to read her book, but had no idea it was going to be THIS good of a read. It is a page turner! Well-written, compelling, very human, very real, and she really takes you along on the journey of a lifetime. Any parent or someone considering becoming a parent - this is a MUST read on keeping your kids safe. If you have every been victimized and want to learn how to empower yourself, this is your book. Wow, Polly, great job.
I was so excited to get my copy of Devil at My Door but could never have imagined that I would read it in one night. I could not put it down! This book is a well written account of a woman who faces unimaginable obstacles as she seeks justice for her children and all of the victims of Joseph Smith. I have always liked books about survivors and people who overcome. This story is inspiring story of justice being served by a brave and relentless woman.
Polly and I met on the John Walsh show. I would find it difficult to say how impressed I was with her courage and determination at that time. That is more true now that I have read her compelling book. This is an account of incredible courage and remarkable persistence in the face of a stunningly elusive and resilient predator who manages to work every weakness in our adversarial judicial system to his advantage and manipulate everyone from his family to a seriously misguided psychiatrist to do it. It seemed as if Polly was practically the only one who could see behind the mask the peredator Joseph Smith put on to move about in the world. The true story is enough to make you reluctant to open a window at night without a pistol and a pit bull.
Very interesting subject matter but writing was so so.
This book really makes you look at your surroundings and a good story about never giving up! What a good read! I highly recommend.

Great read on the topic of sexual predators!! Polly Franks details the nightmare of finding a trusted individual commit such a horrid violation, and her tenacity to put this monster behind bars.
